Brief Introduction of the Organization

The problem that face most of our community members in our areas is lack of knowledge and poverty among them, this has hindered the rights of sexual reproductive health rights to women, children and youth. Inadequate knowledge has caused gender based violence to women, children and youth in general. In collaboration with the government and other stakeholders PEWCY “Promote and Empower of Women, Children and Youth Tanzania” intends to address the challenge of limited knowledge and poverty among the community members. The government of Tanzania has specific strategies to address issue of gender equality and human security in our country, as an organization we collaborate with the government to strengthen the government strategies so as all women, children and youth will know their basic rights in the community.

Head Office and Area of Operation

The organization is called Promote and Empower Women, Children and Youth (PEWCY). It is registered as a non-governmental organization through the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special groups ACT 2002 with Registration No: 00NGO/R/6984. The head office is located at Shangani street, nearby, SHANGANI ward, Mtwara District, in Mtwara Region. The organization operates nationally in all regions of Tanzania. PEWCY is operating as a humanitarian non-profit, non-governmental organization and is not being involved in any political activities.

 Our Vision

Promote the welfare of all Women, Children and Youth through education, land rights and basic human rights.

Our Mission

Tanzania society where Women, Children and Youth have access to education and other basic rights.

Objectives

  1.  To promote the rights of Women, Children and Youth, lobbying and advocacy in education and inclusion.
  2. To empower Women, Children and Youth to strengthen house hold economy.
  3. To raise awareness to the community on the basic human rights especially; Women, Children and Youth.
  4. To raise a awareness of Women, Children and Youth on the effects of Gender based violence (GBV), Early pregnancy, child marriage and other harmful traditional practices.

Specific Objectives:

  • To create community awareness of the emotional, psychological, and physical risks associated with Child Marriage, and violation of fundamental human rights, as well as the laws of United Republic of Tanzania.
  • To provide a forum for community members to communicate openly about child marriage and other forms of Gender Based Violence.
  • To provide a culturally acceptable alternative rite.
  • Women and youth empowerment

Srategies:

  • Girl child enrolment and retention in primary schools.
  • Community dialogue on female, children and youth related issues.
  • Formation of adolescence clubs and small groups at lower levels.
  • Introduction of guidance and counselling activities in schools.
  • Regular alternative rite of passage ceremonies in the communities.

Partnership:

  • Government Officials – These are the policy implementers at community level and are resource persons in enforcement of the policies/laws.
  • Health workers and teachers: will teach reproductive health issues and help in forming human rights clubs in schools.
  • Local authorities – elected local authorities officials are decision makers at community level and will help the project to be heard.
  • Advocates of the civil rights of community members they will assist in mobilization and sensitization of community members.
  • Community members – participation and ownership is crucial for the sustainability of the project.

Sustainability

Financial level:

  • Key organizational leaders and staff will be trained in resource mobilization skills and will be linked to appropriate funding agencies to be able to finance their causes in future.
  • With sustained and focused lobby and advocacy by networking with other indigenous peoples, NGO, international organizations and the communities within Tanzania, it is envisaged that funding from both devolved as well as national government, will prioritize indigenous women or girl’s needs. Policy reforms in the departments of social services, gender, will bring increased funding for anti GBV.

Community Level: Promotion of the alternative rite of passage, once entrenched into the community structure will be a part of the community events that they can manage on their own.

Policy level: The action is anticipated to influence improved girl child rights. Lobby and advocacy activities will ultimately ensure that justice is given to young girls who have had no say on whether or not they should undergo child marriage and other forms of GBV

Application of Penal Code and Contravening by-laws:

The organization or a member of the organization shall report all incidents of human rights violation or acts of criminal nature to the government departments and assist the victim and the said department during the investigation before the matter is filed in court. The organization shall also prosecute civil cases of her clients in courts of law.
